Eyes screwed tight shut in the coffin, facemask still in place and presumably reeking of booze, a Peruvian mayor’s attempt to escape arrest by impersonating a corpse failed to deceive police officers. Jaime Uriba Torres, mayor of the Andean town of Tantará, went out drinking with friends on Monday, breaking the country’s curfew and social distancing policies. When police were alerted to the situation, and fearing their night of pisco was about to turn sour, Uriba and several of his friends hid in coffins built for coronavirus victims. Drunkenly believing that their subterfuge had worked, the men remained motionless in the coffins whilst the police snapped photos of them before taking them into custody. Residents had previously decried Uriba’s leadership, pointing out that he had only spent 8 days in the town since the state of emergency was announced on 25 March. On May 9 he was called to attend a public meeting where he was accused of not taking the pandemic seriously.
